Book Talk & Signing with Channy Chhi Laux

April 21, 2018

Join us at 4:00 p.m. and meet Channy Chhi Laux, author of “Short Hair Detention: Memoir of a Thirteen-Year-Old-Girl Surviving the Cambodian Genocide”.  Channy will share her compelling story, “Surviving the Khmer Rouge:  Challenges & Rewards of Writing about the Cambodian Genocide”.

In April 1975, Channy Chhi Laux was a happy thirteen-year-old girl who was excited to start a new school year. But as news reports announced that the Khmer Rouge was getting closer to taking control of Cambodia, Channy and her family were forced to relocate to Poipet, a border town to Thailand. From that point forward, Channy lived a life dictated by fear.

Senator Patty Pansing Brooks will be in attendance to welcome Channy back to Lincoln and present her with a signed poster of the Nebraska State Capitol, a building which Channy often refers to as her Statue of Liberty. During Channy’s time in Lincoln she lived within Senator Pansing Brook’s legislative district with her mother, sister, and two brothers.
